From what I remember watching gardening programmes, I think you need to create a bottom using clay or a pond liner.

Hi Claire

didn't spot this thread till today. how are you getting on? I have tried bog gardens in the past, usually on the edge of a pond, so you get a transition. My trouble has always been that I forgot to look after it, so it gets overgrown and stops being a bog garden! But I have a friend who has a good one.

You will definitely need to prevent water from seeping out - so unless you have a naturally boggy place, yes, a pond liner is needed. And situation is a consideration - if it is in dark shadow, it could become a smelly bog, and if it is in full hot sun you would need to consider how to keep it damp. by now you have probably started and it would be great to hear how you get on.

I have been interested to see how many ordinary plants will grow well in pond edges, including dutch irises, bugle and even pineapple mint! The moral of that story being twofold - you will have no difficulty finding things to grow in it, but also your ordinary plants might well decide they like it better than the flower bed!

Keep us posted, and it would be nice to see some photos. You could bring them to the herb evening if you are coming.

flo

hi flo,
thanks for asking ! i have started but due to my nan being in hospital the last three weeks i havent had much time to finish it !
my biggest problem has been that my pond is risen fron the ground a bit as i have children and i have a small nephew as well so i am thinking of haw i can get it to meet at the level of the pond so it does link together ?????!!!!!
i have a pond liner and i have dug out a shallow piece of ground but hopfully things will get back to a bit of normality now that we have sorted nurses out to care for nan at home ( ruh needed her bed so she got sent home to look after herself after she had been kept in bed for three weeks and is a frail 85 year old ! )
i will definately keep you posted
kind regards
claire
