now is the time to take semi ripe cuttings off those favorite plants of yours ! ( or any you have seen in your neighbours garden ! lol)

some good semi ripe cuttings are :
hebe
verbena
phlox
euphorbia
pittosporum
magnolia

these are to name but a few!
put in 3 inch pots or module trays with seed and cutting compost and use a rooting powder.

Are semi ripe the ones with some woody bit on? Do they need protection during the winter?

semi ripe are when they have just started to harden up ,so you normally get half and half , soft and hard on a stem . if there is a new bud on it ( but it musnt of flowered ) take it off so that all the energy goes into producing roots and new leaf shoots.
i keep mine indoors in a coolish room in a mini greenhouse or under polythene to help get them established. if you do put them outdoors then i would give them protection i.e a green house etc.
all i do with mine is spray them with water after i have sat them in a water tray for a few minutes to begin with.

i have two types of hebe and bottle brush plants on the go at the moment!

I would be really interested in trying a bottle brush cutting if you could possibly bring along a twig to the plant swap, if you are going.
Was it you Clare who also had the syringa shrub?
Does anyone have a pittosporum I could try too?

Thanks,

Carrie
