Friend or foe

My Neighbour was trimmimg his hedge this morning and this chap wandered out and has been sat on the fence ever since. Click on the picture for enlargement.

Any ideas on name and nature? It's about an inch long I guess.

Well done you. I've never seen one before. They munch leaves and the grubs eat roots. Ah well I don't have the heart to stomp on it.
